BACKGROUND:
Plot
Teddie
Teddie's role in the story is that of the comic relief with the added bonus of somehow being very complex. As a mysterious being living inside the TV World, a world only inhabited by the antagonistic Shadows, very little is known about him right off the bat. In fact, he doesn't seem to want anything to do with the cast in the beginning, ushering them out of his world because it's too dangerous. It isn't until they return that he agrees to help them and join their investigation, but only for selfish reasons. The murders taking place in his world are caused by an outside, human source, and are causing the Shadows to become restless. Teddie's reason to help is only because he wants his world back to "normal," but his motives don't stay that way for long. Having now met people, Teddie becomes addicted to their companionship and soon realizes that he's been incredibly lonely this whole time. As the story progresses, Teddie becomes depressed as his friends travel back and forth between worlds, leaving him behind.
In fact, Teddie soon realizes that he knows nothing about himself and this amnesia is basically what drives his character arc. After fighting Rise's Shadow, Teddie soon has to face his own, a giant monster that parrots everything Teddie's feared: That he is nothing. The idea of regaining his memories only to find out there was nothing there to begin with haunts him, but the defeat of his Shadow opens his eyes and he declares he'll keep looking even if there's nothing there. He gains a Persona in the process, allowing him to aid his friends in their investigation, as well as a human body which he uses to leave the TV World.
Now living as a human who occasionally puts on a bear suit, Teddie continues to try and learn about himself throughout the game, as well as try to fit in with human society. However, all of his or his friends' attempts to find out what he is come up empty. Although he seems to enjoy life as a human, Teddie also seems to believe that he doesn't really fit in and often brings up that he has to go back to the TV World. This implies multiple times that he worries his friends don't actually want him around, no matter how often they reassure him otherwise.
The turning point comes when Nanako gets kidnapped and eventually "dies" after her rescue. Being very close to her, Teddie can't handle the death and ends up "leaving," although where to seems to be a mystery. Wherever it is, it's somehow connected to the protagonist's Velvet Room. While there, Teddie finally remembers what he's been this whole time: Just another Shadow. Although instead of becoming a monster, Teddie liked humans and took on a bear form so they wouldn't be afraid of him. But this wasn't enough, Teddie was still ashamed of what he was and somehow managed to lock away his memories so he could carry on happily in ignorant bliss. Somehow Teddie returns to the hospital after this realization and finds out his voice was somehow able to bring Nanako back from death. Teddie concludes that even if he is a Shadow, as long as he's important to someone, then that's all that matters. His Persona evolves and he continues to work on the investigation.
PERSONALITY:
The first impression Teddie gives, other than being a giant talking stuffed bear thing, is that he's a big friendly dork. Teddie, in a nutshell, is described as the group clown; he acts just as ridiculous as he appears. He loves to laugh, have a good time, make corny jokes, and especially likes to sprinkle what he says with a bear pun or two. (Even if they don't make much sense.) He's pretty much a cheerful kind of bear.
Like, for example, he likes to cheerfully look through all your stuff. Curiosity is a rather strong factor to Teddie's character. Lots and lots of things are still 'new' for him, as such he tends to poke his nose in places it probably shouldn't be or gets carried away when investigating new places. Yukiko mentions during their first shopping trip at Junes that Teddie messed up the women's section of the store pretty badly. It's this curiosity and lack of knowledge that gives Teddie a sort of innocent and naive charm. Things like saying words he just heard and/or doesn't know the meaning to and asking lots of questions about things most people should know are common behaviors of his.
In general, it's because of this that Teddie tends to act much like a child than he does a teenager. He has a very simple way of thinking and complex ideas easily confuse or frustrate him. He likes sweet foods, ice cream --'topsicles' being his favorite--stories with happy endings, and songs with upbeat tunes. Therefore, Teddie has an easier time connecting and relating with children rather than his own 'peers'. This is why he becomes extremely close friends with the protagonist's six-year-old cousin, Nanako. (Who he affectionately refers to as 'Nana-chan')
With a child-like personality, however, comes all the negative aspects of one, too. Teddie is prone to crying, whining, and throwing tantrums when he doesn't get his way or doesn't fully understand something. He will shout, flail his arms, and genuinely be a nuisance. His work ethic is surprisingly nonexistent. To put it simply, he's lazy when it comes to manual work. At his job at Junes, he tends to cut corners and take naps in the mattress section when on the clock. He seems to have no shame in this, either, fully admitting and almost proud of his laziness.
Along with that, Teddie has been known to display some animalistic characteristics. He will growl when he's angry, although it's not very threatening, attempt to roar, and is not above biting stray fingers that venture too close to his mouth. He's getting better when it comes to these mannerisms, but they do tend to 'shine' when he's in a battle.
In social situations, Teddie has proven to be, well, awkward. Again, thanks to living alone the majority of his life, he has a hard time with what's acceptable and what is not when dealing with other people. He sees no problem when it comes to invading personal space, staring, and he has a very weird habit of rolling around for little to no reason. In fact, if Teddie isn't acting socially inept, his friends become suspicious because they're just that used to it by now. Even though he can be annoying, Teddie can at least pass for tolerable and it's pretty easy to ignore his ...Teddieness.
If there's one thing Teddie loves, though, it's humans. Humans were pretty much a huge deciding factor when it came to basically his whole direction in life, literally shaping him to what he is today. Before humans, all Teddie ever knew was loneliness. There was nothing else. It was only when the team came crashing down from the sky did he find the joys of friendship, companionship, or even simply having his existence acknowledged.
Girls, in particular, are Teddie's favorite. Thanks to an earlier conversation when the team was battling Yukiko's Shadow, Teddie has a fascination with 'scoring'. He then developed the nasty little habit of becoming a huge flirt, hitting on the girls of the team whenever possible. This, of course, always fails, but Teddie doesn't seem to slow down or give up on it. It is unclear whether or not Teddie actually knows what scoring is. Although, because of his general lack of understanding most things anyway, it can be assumed that he doesn't and all advances should be taken with a grain of salt. Either way, he has dreams of 'smooching' and will only ever let girls pet his silky soft fur. He will outright deny any male requests for petting, seen multiple times when Kanji asks. (Although it is apparently possible to win him over via an act of kindness and/or for a favor)
All this joyful bear stuff is only one side to him, though. In actuality, Teddie is a surprisingly complex critter. He has a lot of feelings, most of them conflicting, and he doesn't understand how to express them properly half the time. This is, again, due in part to living the majority of his life completely isolated from other sentient life. As one can imagine, actually being introduced to outside life has expanded his view on the world and, in turn, has opened up many new feelings and questions that he now seeks answers to.
For the longest time, one of those questions was who or what he was thanks to some self induced amnesia. The majority of his character arc seems to be focused on this and it causes him a great deal of stress. Of course, when he eventually finds out he was originally a Shadow, he's not too happy about that and can see why he forced himself to forget in the first place. It's thanks to the help of the protagonist and Nanako that he comes to accept this and is declared "just like humans" by his friends where it doesn't seem to bother him anymore.
Teddie also has bouts of separation anxiety, he doesn't like being alone now that he knows what friendship is. He has been noted outright refusing to return to the TV World on his own, rather wanting to stay with Yosuke and putting up with working at Junes than having to deal with staying there again. When Teddie does believe it's time to return, he'll usually sulk and ask if he can still stay, to which the answer is always a yes and no one can understand why Teddie keeps asking that. It can be hinted through this that it's a constant worry of his that he'll be forced to go back one day. This changes near the end of the game once the TV world is restored to its beautiful self and Teddie has no issues with going back. He'll still visit from time to time. Or a lot. You can never rid yourself of bear.
It's also because of this that Teddie is very attached to anyone he makes friends with. No matter how much he may argue with some of them, he adores them all and would put his life on the line for any of them. The last thing Teddie wants is to lose any of his friends and, so help him, you better not mess with them.
Speaking of, this is the only thing that allows him to fight. Normally, Teddie is a coward. Large, spooky things usually frighten him, UNLESS he has someone to back him up and encourage him OR he's protecting his friends. Teddie has described these moments of courage as his feet just moving on their own at least twice. Since gaining a Persona, Teddie doesn't run away screaming as much as he used to, but if something seems like a monster to him, you can be sure he's not going to try and make friends right away.
All in all, Teddie is like an emotional roller coaster. He's normally a happy-go-lucky, comic relief sort of guy, but every now and then he could use a little pick-me-up. You get used to him.
POWER:
Persona (canon):
Like the majority of Teddie's friends, he can summon and utilize a Persona. A Persona, although appears to be a separate entity, is actually just an extension of Teddie himself. It's described as sort of like a living mask one can use when facing hardship. In Persona 4, Personas are summoned by smashing tarot cards that the user kind of...brings forth out of thin air. Why are you questioning a stuffed bear?!
Teddie's Persona is Kamui, who can use both ice-based and healing magic. He also has the ability "Traesto" which is used to "escape dungeons", but the chances of him using that in this setting are slim. Kamui resist wind and dark-based powers, is completely immune to anything ice-based, but is weak against electricity. Because they're technically the same person, Teddie is the same way.
Shadow properties (canon):
NOT AS COOL AS IT SOUNDS, this just means Teddie is a Shadow and has a few quirks to him. Mainly in the form of his suit. It's hard to miss that the suit is pretty much alive. The face emotes, his ears twitch, the tail bobs up and down, etc. This only works for Teddie. It is quite possible for others to put on his suit, but when other people wear it, it's just a suit. When Yu puts it on in the anime, the face is frozen in a permanent smile, so it's likewise the same for everyone else. This also means that, for whatever reason, Teddie's human form can't be x-rayed. So, uh, sorry anyone who wanted to see his skeleton I guess.
Anyone who can sense more dark-aligned creatures can probably pick up on what he really is. It won't be terribly overwhelming, but Persona 4 Arena proved Teddie can't hide his Shadowness.
Bear shapeshifting (noncanon):
If you're going to be the weird bear kid, you might as well go all the way. Teddie can turn himself into a bear, in his case a polar bear to go with his ice theme. He gets all the strength and enhanced senses a bear would get and that's it. It'll definitely be an experience... NOW WITH FUN REF

No one ever gave Teddie a personal ride before, it's just not something that happened. Trains? Sure. But an escort? Goodness, didn't he feel important? You know, if the whole "sucked out from your world" thing didn't make him feel like a legit Chosen One already or anything.
But there was a lot of information, enough to make his head spin, and Teddie wasn't sure if he wanted to cry just yet. Incidentally, it also made him much more quieter than usual, his eyes held low as he distracted himself with the rather professional looking folder he was given. Er, well, actually, why wouldn't it be professional? He's a professional, after all! The right bear for the job or...something along those lines. That's what he told himself anyway. It was the only thing keeping him from freaking out over the situation, the lid covering the eventual tantrum that's sure to come. He was wanted. The saying repeated over and over in his head, echoing through his furry ears, until he finally decided to break the ice and clear his throat.
"Let's just take a look-see at what we got here," he tried to sound as cool as possible, almost as if he was trying to impress the lady solider who was escorting him. Teddie threw the file open carelessly, only to have papers fly in his face. Yeah, that's impressive. Eyes large and pupil's tiny, they quickly flew towards his escort to see if she noticed.
Not a single reaction.
A mental sigh of relief was given as he straightened his folder out, acting as though that's totally what he meant to do. Although at this point, his brow furrows slightly, giving away the inner torment that was 'OH GOD SHE MUST THINK I'M A BIG FURRY LOSER.'
"Haha, y-yeah, I tooootally meant to do that," because nothing said 'don't notice this' like bringing it up.
The awkward silence that followed was enough for Teddie to finally look at what was in his file, only to be overwhelmed by the amount of information in it. Just words, everywhere, huge words! Words he didn't even know! A slight look of panic crawled on his face as it soon dawned on him just how heavy this situation was, all because of one folder. If the folder was this complicated, then just think about the actual problem!
With the world's most nervous chuckle, Teddie slooooowly proceeded to slip the folder between the zipper of his suit.
"I'll just, hehe, save this one for later..."
